Where the Crawdads Sing
Kya was one of four children in her household. Her mother left when she was very young. When the two oldest sisters got old enough they soon left as well. Lastly, the brother took off and left Kya all by herself with their dad. The whole family was torn apart by their abusive father that had a bad alcohol problem. Kya tried her best to stay out of his way and basically raised herself in the marsh. She never attended school and learned the ways of the marsh. The movie jumps back and forth from her when she was little to when she was as a teenager.
The beginning of the movie starts with some young boys finding a dead body in the marsh. Throughout the movie the plot jumps back and forth between Kya's childhood to the investigation on who killed the guy. Kya was the number one suspect in the murder for this guy because everyone in the town knew that Kya was very familiar with the marsh, she was not trusted by the town people, and not to mention this guy was her ex. This particular ex had a finance the whole time he was dating Kya and continued to harrass her and also tried to rape her. Her first boyfriend that she had named Tate also grew up in the marsh but decided to go off to college but always encourage Kya to submit her drawings of the animals in the marsh to authors of nature books. Kya takes Tates advice and sends off her drawings all while she is going through the court cases. As the movie is coming to an end Kya's timeline lines up so well with her traveling to meet with these offers that there is no way she could have killed this guy so she was pleaded not guilty. In the end she knew this guy was never going to stop coming for her so she had to do something. The movie ends by Kya saying "For the prey to live, the predator must die."
Personally, this is one of my favorite movies. I have never seen the novel that the movie is based off of so I don't know how to compare them but the movie by itself is amazing. The story line and the way the movie jumps back and forth between timelines works out very well for this movie. I think the producers were very successful with this movie and it is one that I will keep watching over the years.
